WHERE: Star Cinema…with Bryan.
The summer movie season of 2008 begins, officially begins. When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I was completely stoked. Great character, and Robert Downey Jr in the role of Tony Stark seemed so right.
THE GOOD: Robert Downey, Jr; encounter with the jets; creation of the suit
THE BAD: Terence Howard as background decoration; Jon Favreau’s completely wooden chauffeur
THE WONKY: Jeff Bridges; Tony Stark’s robot friends
Yes! This movie rocked my world. OK, it wasn’t perfect, but it hit so many high notes that I enjoyed the crap out of this movie. Can’t wait for Iron Man 2.
First off…Robert Downey Jr (RDJ) IS Tony Stark. He totally pulls off the ego, the arrogance, the womanizing, partying, brains….man…he is good. His evolution is believable, his creation of the suit and his alter ego….great stuff. The origin story is cool, not spectacular….and the terrorist villains seem a little more promising than they turn out to be….but oh well…and poor Terence Howard…not bad by any stretch, but hey…he’d like something cool to do too….next movie
I liked his relationship with Pepper Pots (Gwyneth) and they had a nice repartee. Jeff Bridges…not so much…he chewed the scenery hardcore, and his best line…”Tony Stark did it IN A CAVE!!!! WITH SCRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Was absolutely hilarious. He is not very good, well…in the part, ok, but it is a comic book role suited for his acting style. But he isn’t one that I typically like very much…and his evolution into the bad guy was ok, but in the end…ok…fight at the end was decent, and I liked how both Iron Man and Iron Monger used their environments in the fighting…
The jet plane encounter was the highlight…fast, fun, exciting…and really captured the excitement tinged with fear as to what it would be like to be an ordinary person doing unbelievable shit in a suit designed for nothing less than saving the world. Oh yeah…I can fly.
